HAYLE BEACH, CORNWALL BATCH 012
From Ghost Net to Butter Knife: Eddie the Dog’s Big Beach Rescue
At Ecotribo, we’re proud to work alongside Clean Ocean Sailing, an incredible Cornwall-based crew dedicated to protecting our coastlines. On one of their clean-up missions at Hayle Beach, their four-legged first mate, Eddie the do,g sniffed out a hidden ghost net tangled in the sand — a dangerous threat to local marine life. Thanks to Eddie’s sharp nose and his human friends, the net was recovered and passed on to us by Steve from Clean Ocean Sailing. We shredded and recycled the recovered fishing net at our Bristol microfactory, transforming it into durable recycled plastic sheets. From those sheets, we crafted a limited run of butter knives, combining reclaimed ocean plastic handles with Sheffield steel blades — a small but meaningful way to turn marine waste into something beautiful, useful, and built to last. Stay tuned for what else we make as we transform waste to wonder.
Why Ghost Nets Matter
Scientists now estimate that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains a staggering 100,000 tonnes of plastic - up to 16 times more than previously believed. To put that into perspective, that’s the weight of over 740 Boeing 777s drifting across the sea. and pose one of the greatest threats to marine life. By recycling ghost nets into new products that last a lifetime and are fully recyclable, we not only help clean our beaches by getting this stuff out of harm's reach but also close the loop - reducing demand for virgin plastic (which uses a significant amount of C02) and inspiring a circular economy built on purpose and care for the planet.
