Report ghost nets
If you spot ghost fishing gear around the coast of the UK, please let us know immediately.
We have partnered with Sea Shepherd and Clean Ocean Sailing; processing recovered nets into our ocean plastic products.
Help us to clean our sea & plant positivity.
Lost and discarded fishing gear is a significant threat to marine life. Around 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear is lost or discarded annually into the ocean. This gear can continue to kill wildlife for years after it is abandoned and is known as "ghost gear."
In the UK, lost and discarded fishing gear is the second largest source of marine debris. Over 1250 kilometers of nets alone are lost in UK waters each year. It is estimated that over 150,000 seals, cetaceans, seabirds, turtles, and sharks are killed annually by lost fishing gear.
Several things can be done to reduce the amount of lost and discarded fishing gear. These include:
-
Using better gear that is less likely to be lost or discarded
-
Improving the way that gear is stored and handled
-
Reporting lost and discarded gear to the authorities
We all have a role to play in protecting our oceans from the harmful effects of lost and discarded fishing gear. By working together, we can make a difference.
