WHAT IS THIS KNIFE MADE FROM?

The handle of this limited-edition pen knife is made using recycled fishing net recovered in Cornwall following a seal rescue by the BDMLR.

A young grey seal became entangled in the 30.7-metre net at Gyllyngvase Beach, Falmouth. BDMLR responders rescued the seal and recovered the fishing gear.

Ecotribo then cleaned and processed the recovered net into recycled material for the unique pen-knife handles.

WHAT IS ECOTRACEABILITY®?

Ecotraceability® is Ecotribo's approach to documenting the journey of recovered material from recovery to finished product.

Where possible, we identify:

  • where material was recovered

  • what the original material was

  • how it was processed

  • what it became

  • where the finished product was made

This means “recycled” doesn't have to be the end of the story.

It can be the beginning.

WHERE DID THE GHOST NET COME FROM?

The fishing net was recovered at Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, Cornwall, after a young grey seal became entangled in it.

The net was 30.7 metres long and weighed 23.5kg.

BDMLR rescued, assessed and released the seal and recovered the fishing gear.

The recovered material was subsequently sent to Ecotribo for recycling and processing.

HOW WAS THE GHOST NET RECYCLED?

Recovered fishing gear can contain dirt, salt, marine debris and other contamination.

Ecotribo processes suitable recovered fishing gear by cleaning, sorting and mechanically processing the material into usable recycled plastic.

For this project, the recycled material was used to create the handles of a limited-edition pen knife.

WHERE IS THE KNIFE MADE?

The recycled ghost-net material is processed by Ecotribo in the UK.

The knife blades are made in Sheffield, England, bringing together recovered marine material and British knife-making craftsmanship.
