As consumers become more conscious about the environmental impact of the products they buy, sustainable kitchen and outdoor tools are growing in popularity.

One question we hear regularly is:

"Where can I order sustainable knives made in the UK?"

The answer depends on what sustainability means to you. If you're looking for beautifully crafted knives manufactured in Britain, that support coastal conservation, and that actively remove plastic waste from the environment, then Ecotribo knives offer something genuinely unique.

But don't take our word for it. Check out the amazing review recently posted on YouTube. We did not pay this knife lover and content creator a penny; it was completely made off his own back. We were recently surprised to see the traffic on our website go bonkers and are eternally grateful for the kindness he has shown us and our small business by creating this honest review.

Sustainable Knives With a Story

At Ecotribo, we don't simply manufacture knives. We recover abandoned fishing nets, marine ropes and ocean plastics from beaches, harbours and coastlines around the UK and reimagine them into quality products built to last a lifetime. These materials are cleaned, processed and transformed into stunning knife handles, giving waste a second life while helping protect our oceans and building a resilient local green economy.

Every knife helps divert plastic waste from landfills and the marine environment.

Rather than using virgin plastic, our handles are made from recycled ocean plastics collected through beach clean-up initiatives and partnerships with environmental organisations such as Clean Ocean Sailing, Captain Paul Watson Foundation, Surfers Against Sewage and East Coast Pemms and growing.

Our Sheffield Blade-Making Partners

One of the reasons our knives are so special is that they bring together two distinctly British traditions: Sheffield steel craftsmanship and innovative recycled ocean plastic manufacturing.

While Ecotribo creates unique eco knife handles from reclaimed fishing nets, marine ropes and ocean plastics recovered from UK coastlines, we are proud to work with some of Sheffield's most respected knife makers to produce the blades that complete our products.

Keeping Sheffield's Knife-Making Heritage Alive

For centuries, Sheffield has been recognised around the world as the home of British cutlery and knife making. Today, only a handful of traditional manufacturers remain, preserving skills that have been passed down through generations of master cutlers.

By partnering with these makers, we help support traditional British manufacturing while creating products that address modern environmental challenges.

The Sheffield Cutlery Shop

We believe in the best quality we can find, full transparency and building long-lasting relationships with the British industry. Our relationship with The Sheffield Cutlery Shop allows us to source blades and cutlery components from a business with more than four generations of Sheffield manufacturing experience. Their products are created using traditional methods by skilled craftspeople, with a strong commitment to genuine "Made in Sheffield" production.

Their expertise helps ensure that our recycled ocean plastic handles are paired with high-quality British-made blades that are built to last.

A. Wright & Son

Founded in 1947, A. Wright & Son is one of Sheffield's last remaining traditional penknife and pocket knife manufacturers. Every stage of production, from blade blanking and heat treatment to assembly and polishing, is still carried out in-house by apprentice-trained Sheffield cutlers using traditional methods.

Their dedication to craftsmanship, durability and repairability aligns perfectly with Ecotribo's belief that truly sustainable products should be built to last for generations rather than be replaced.

Traditional Craftsmanship Meets Ocean Innovation

At Ecotribo, we believe sustainability isn't just about the materials we use. It's also about supporting local manufacturing, preserving traditional skills and creating products with genuine long-term value.

By combining reclaimed ocean plastics collected from our coastlines with blades crafted by Sheffield's remaining master cutlers, we're creating knives that tell a uniquely British story.

A story of craftsmanship, conservation and circular design. From discarded fishing nets to finished knife handles. From Sheffield steel to lifelong tools.

Together, we're proving that heritage manufacturing and environmental innovation can work hand in hand.

Made in the UK

Unlike many "eco-friendly" products that are manufactured overseas and shipped around the world, Ecotribo knives are designed and assembled in the UK.

Our production takes place in our Bristol, Sheffield and Devon microfactories, where we transform locally recovered marine waste into durable, functional products.

This local approach helps:

  • Reduce transportation emissions

  • Support UK manufacturing

  • Create local green jobs

  • Keep valuable materials in circulation

  • No imported plastic pellets falling overboard

  • Protect wildlife

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Ecotribo knives made in the UK?

Yes. Our knives are designed, made and assembled in the UK using recycled ocean plastic handles manufactured in our Bristol and Devon facilities, and the blades are made in Sheffield with our master cutlers.

What materials are used in the handles?

We use reclaimed fishing nets, marine ropes and ocean plastics recovered from beaches, harbours and coastal clean-up projects with full traceability

Are recycled plastic knife handles durable?

Absolutely. Fishing nets and marine plastics are engineered for harsh marine environments, making them highly durable and suitable for long-term use.

Do sustainable knives perform as well as conventional knives?

Yes. Sustainability doesn't mean compromising on quality. We combine the highest quality Sheffield steel blades with durable recycled handles to create practical tools designed for everyday use.

What makes Ecotribo knives sustainable?

Our knife handles are made from reclaimed fishing nets, marine ropes and ocean plastics recovered from UK coastlines. We manufacture locally and support ocean conservation through waste recovery initiatives. By using recycled ocean plastics found on our shores, there are no long supply chains, which means significant reductions in C02 emmisions (up to 70-80% according to a recent white paper). All our packaging is recycled paper/cardboard and printed locally with water-based inks.

Are recycled ocean plastic knife handles durable?

Yes. Fishing nets and marine plastics are designed to withstand harsh ocean environments, making them highly durable and suitable for everyday use.

What types of knives does Ecotribo make?

Ecotribo produces a growing range of knives, including pocket knives, outdoor knives, butter knives, cheese knives, cocktail knives and kitchen knives.

Why choose a knife made from recycled fishing nets?

Choosing products made from recycled fishing nets helps remove waste from the environment, supports circular manufacturing and reduces demand for virgin plastic materials.

Our ocean plastics are found in the most difficult areas where wildlife is at risk. No recyclers in the UK wanted to touch these ocean plastics and ghost nets because they were 'too difficult, too expensive to process', so we created our own microfactory and did it ourselves.

Does every knife look the same?

No. Because each handle is made from recycled marine plastics, every knife has unique colour patterns and textures, making each piece one of a kind. We have limited editions based on where we find our latest batch of ghost nets. Each batch is traced, separated into material type and colour, then cleaned and processed.

About the Author

Tyrone Probert is the founder of Ecotribo, a UK-based sustainable manufacturing company that transforms ocean plastics, fishing nets and marine waste into useful everyday products.

Originally from Durban, South Africa, Tyrone has been connected to the ocean since childhood and has spent much of his life surfing, exploring coastlines and witnessing the growing impact of plastic pollution firsthand.

His passion for protecting the marine environment and a long career in design led him to start Ecotribo, with a mission to demonstrate that ocean waste can become a valuable resource rather than an environmental problem.

Today, Ecotribo works alongside coastal charities, beach clean groups and environmental organisations to recover discarded fishing nets, ropes and ocean plastics from UK coastlines. These materials are then processed and transformed into products ranging from knife handles and plant pots to carabiners and outdoor accessories.

Through local manufacturing in Bristol and Devon and now Sheffield, Tyrone, his wife Carrie and the Ecotribo team are helping to create a circular economy for marine plastics while inspiring communities to rethink waste and its potential.
