Ecotribo's Mission to Transform Ocean Plastic Featured in Devon Life & The Global Ghost Gear Initiative.

Ocean plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges today. Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste enter our oceans, harming marine life and ecosystems. Ecotribo, a local initiative dedicated to tackling this issue, has recently been featured in Devon Life magazine and is also now a part of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative. This recognition highlights their inspiring mission to collect ocean plastic and turn it into sustainable, everyday products. This blog post explores Ecotribo’s journey, their innovative approach, and how their work is making a difference in Devon and beyond.

How Ecotribo Collects Ocean Plastic

Ecotribo’s work begins with the collection of marine waste along the Devon, Cornish & Welsh coastline. A growing group of volunteers, coastal charities and local partners organise regular beach clean-ups, gathering plastic debris that would otherwise pollute the sea. Ecotribo have worked with a diverse range of coastal beach lovers and charities, from The Captain Paul Watson Foundation, Clean Ocean Sailing, East Coast Pemms, Earth Action North Devon, to the National Trust Devon. This hands-on approach not only removes harmful waste but also raises community awareness about the scale of ocean pollution.

The collected plastic includes items like fishing nets, bottles, and packaging materials. These are carefully sorted and cleaned to prepare them for the next stage: transformation. By involving local communities, Ecotribo builds a strong network of environmental stewards who understand the importance of protecting their coastline.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Ocean Plastic Recycling

Ecotribo’s work is part of a growing global effort, including their recent affliation with the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, to address ocean plastic pollution through innovation and community involvement. Advances in recycling technology and increased public awareness are creating new opportunities for sustainable product development, all whilst cleaning our coasts and protecting wildlife.

Transforming Waste into Useful Products

Once the plastic is collected, Ecotribo uses a local manufacturing process to turn it into durable, sustainable products. This circular design approach ensures that waste is not just removed but given a new life. The products range from everyday items such as plant pots, garden furniture, carabiners and a growing range of eco knives. Our butter knives, cheese knives and cocktail knives are now available to like-minded brands for custom branding.

Using local manufacturing has several benefits:

  • It reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation.

  • Many lifecycle assessments show ~40%–70% lower emissions for recycled plastics versus virgin production.

  • By collecting these plastics from our coastlines, it protects wildlife

  • Reduces the breakdown of ocean plastics into Microplastics

  • It supports local businesses and creates jobs.

  • It allows for better quality control and customisation.

Ecotribo’s commitment to local production reflects their broader goal of environmental responsibility combined with community empowerment.

The Impact of Ecotribo’s Work on Devon’s Environment

Devon’s coastline is a vital natural resource, attracting tourists and supporting local wildlife. Ecotribo’s efforts help preserve this environment by reducing plastic pollution and encouraging sustainable habits. The visibility gained from the Devon Life and Global Ghost Gear Initiative features brings more attention to the issue and inspires others to join the movement.

The initiative also educates the public about the importance of circular design - where materials are reused and recycled rather than discarded. This mindset shift is crucial for long-term environmental health.

Ecotribo has recently won an innovation award for their environmental Ocean plastics Workshops and is keen to expand upon their recycling workshops right on the beach in Devon and beyond.

How You Can Support Ecotribo’s Mission

If you live in Devon or are visiting, you can support Ecotribo in several ways:

  • Participate in local beach clean-ups organised by Ecotribo or similar groups.

  • If you need a gift, buy sustainably from Ecotribo's Shop Online

  • Choose products made from recycled ocean plastic to encourage sustainable consumption.

  • Pick up a copy of Devon Life to read the full feature and learn more about their story.

  • Spread awareness about ocean pollution and the value of circular design in your community.

Every small action contributes to cleaner coastlines, protects wildlife and creates a healthier planet.

By continuing to focus on local manufacturing and environmental responsibility, Ecotribo sets an example for other regions facing similar challenges. Their story shows that tackling ocean plastic requires both practical solutions and a collective commitment.
