Tackling Microplastics and Ocean Plastics Together: Ecotribo x GUPPYFRIEND Collaboration

Every year, millions of tonnes of ocean plastics and discarded fishing gear enter our seas, threatening marine wildlife, damaging coastal ecosystems, and contributing to the growing microplastics crisis.

At Ecotribo, our mission has always been simple: recover hard-to-recycle ocean waste and transform it into products with purpose. From ghost gear ropes to discarded marine plastics, we work to give waste a second life while raising awareness about the urgent need to protect our oceans.

But recycling ocean plastics responsibly means thinking about the entire process -including how we clean and prepare recovered materials without releasing even more microplastics back into the environment.

That’s why we’re excited to announce we are working with GUPPYFRIEND.

We believe that everyone needs to get on their sustainablity journey one step at a time.

Fighting Microplastics at the Source

Synthetic materials release tiny plastic fibres every time they’re washed. These invisible particles, known as microplastics, often pass through water filtration systems and end up in rivers and oceans, where they can harm marine life and enter the food chain.

The GUPPYFRIEND Wash Bag is designed to help reduce this problem by capturing microfibres during the washing process before they reach our waterways.

As part of our collaboration, we used the GUPPYFRIEND Wash Bag while cleaning recovered ghost gear ropes that many would consider too damaged or contaminated to recycle. The wash bag helped us prepare these materials more responsibly while preventing additional microplastic pollution.

It’s a simple but powerful reminder that small actions can have a meaningful environmental impact.

Turning Ghost Gear into Purposeful Products

Ghost gear - abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing equipment - is one of the most harmful forms of ocean plastic pollution. These materials can drift for years, trapping marine animals and damaging delicate coastal habitats.

At Ecotribo, we collect and process these hard-to-recycle materials through our solar-powered workshop, transforming them into sustainable products that tell a story of regeneration and environmental action.

By combining innovation, recycling, and collaboration, we hope to inspire more conscious choices around plastic waste, circular design, and ocean conservation.
